The Vinton-Shellsburg High School "Red Cedar Shooters" trap shooting team kicked off their 2014 competition season by taking 5th place overall in 2 separate trap invitationals hosted by Cedar Rapids Xavier and Cedar Rapids Jefferson High Schools held Saturday at the Otter Creek Sportsman's Club in Cedar Rapids.

Nearly 300 competitors were in attendance for the day long events, representing 13 eastern Iowa high Schools.

Some noteworthy individual performances of the day:

Elijah Rogers scored a personal best 45/50 in the Xavier Meet.

Sophomore Cole Garwood scored a personal best 48/50 (2 separate 24/25's) in the Jefferson Meet and was the Red Cedar Shooters top shot of that meet, and of the entire day.

Drake Tilson scored a 25 straight in practice rounds, and followed it with another 25 straight from the 16 yard line in the Xavier meet, and was Red Cedars' top shot for that event, and recorded one of only 8 perfect scores for that event. Tilson shot a 46/50 overall for each of the day's events.
The Red Cedar Shooters are composed of 37 Vinton-Shellsburg High School Students who practice at the Red Cedar Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America.

The next event on the Red Cedar Shooters schedule is a home meet at the Red Cedar Izaak Walton League on Hwy 150 north of Vinton, hosting Cedar Rapids Xavier this Saturday, with shooting starting at 9 a.m.

There is no admission charge, and the public is invited to attend.
