Four of the six Vinton-Shellsburg boys varsity bowlers rolled a 200+ game during Friday's home contest vs. Marion. Led by Cole Garwood's 201/244 and Daniel Janssen's 234/204, the Vikings defeated Marion at Berry's Lanes.
The young varsity girls team -- with only three members who had bowled before the beginning of this inaugural season -- continues to improve, said coach Amber Pattee. They lost to Marion by just 153 total pins.
"Both varsity teams exceeded my expectations on Friday," said Pattee. "The Boys team bowled over 200 pins above their average and the Girls team bowled 400 pins over their average. I am so proud at how the teams are working together."
Coach Pattee mentioned several bowlers who had "great games" on Friday: Caitlyn Martin, 190 and Alyssa Bunge, 183 for the girls.
For the boys: Tyler Rasmussen (JV), 231; Cole Garwood, 201 and 244; Nick Stein, 204; Daniel Janssen, 234 and 204, and Jacob Gosse, 234.
This Friday, the VS bowlers take on Waverly-Shellrock in Waverly.
"They are definitely up for the challenge," says the coach.
The spectators' area, as it is during every home event, was full of parents watching their children compete.
Coach Pattee said the bowlers are realizing that she has a lot of knowledge of the sport. The biggest challenge she faces is understanding the styles of those who have been bowling for a while and helping them improve.
Coach Pattee said her goal for the bowlers every contest is to have fun and improve each time.
