A charred child's ball was one of the few things not totally destroyed by a fire Tuesday.

Melvin Roster of rural Vinton escaped injury when his house burned to the ground late Tuesday night.

The house at 2480 54th Street, about 5 miles north of Vinton, was totally destroyed. Roster told firefighters he smelled smoke and was able to escape with his pets. No injuries were reported. The Vinton Fire Department and North Benton Ambulance responded to the scene at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19.
