Jeff Gordon's first race car was a favorite in Garrison during the RAGBRAI ride-through.
The theme of our day during the RAGBRAI ride-through on Thursday was "Make a pit stop in Garrison."
Thanks to Phil Barkdoll, Jeff Gordon's first Nascar ride was on display for the riders to see. Many local volunteers also spent time constructing the overhead water sprinkler, Photo op stations and the racing flags that flew to greet the riders as they came into town.
We had approximately 45 volunteers which represented all of the local non-profit groups (Garrison Fire, GFD Auxillary, Garrison First Repsonders, GBC Park Fund, Lions Club, Garrison Betterment Committee, Library Fund, Old Creamery Nature trail, St Mark's Lutheran church & also the Methodist church) The three non-profit food stands all did great in food & drink sales and that was a welcome boost of income for our local groups. A big conversation starter was the unique shirts that our volunteers wore; which we also sold many of.
The Hitchin Post also had a great crowd for the majority of the day.
We had lots of great compliments from the riders on being such a small town and providing so much variety of food, shade and entertainment. We would definitely welcome Ragbrai back in the future! The community really pulled together and the Ragbrai committee is very proud of the effort that was put into this event and how successful it was.
