With RAGBRAI coming through northern Benton County on Thursday, July 26, 2012 Sheriff Randall Forsyth would encourage people to plan ahead selecting alternative routes of travel on Thursday to avoid the thousands of bicycles. The bicycles will travel from the Tama County line on 65th Street to 15th Avenue turning north to 61st Street turning east to 18th Avenue turning north going through Garrison to Highway 218. The bicycles will travel to Vinton on Highway 218 turning east on 4th Street to 8th Avenue going south to 13th Street and east out of Vinton on 61st Street Lane (County Home Blacktop). At 32nd Avenue the bicycles will turn south through Shellsburg continuing south on 32nd Avenue to 66th Street turning east to Palo.
Those commuting west of Vinton on Highway 218 between 09:00 am and 2:00 pm will experience heavy bicycle traffic and extended delays. Those commuting east of Vinton on 61st Street Lane (County Home Road) to Shellsburg onto Palo between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm will experience heavy bicycle traffic and extended delays. We would recommend that you use 150 North to I-380 or 218 South to Highway 30.
There will be bicyclist travelling along this route all day with some arriving in Benton County as early as 6:00 am and others not leaving Benton County until well after dark. We have estimated the times when the majority of bicyclists will be passing through but we do want to remind everyone to watch for bicyclist and to exercise caution throughout the entire day. Our objective is for a safe and fun filled day for everyone.
