News :: Name of driver killed in Friday accident released

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a one vehicle accident 3 miles north of Shellsburg on 32nd avenue in Benton County that killed Larry Jay Michel, 34, of Brandon, on Friday. Authorities released his name late on Saturday.
The vehicle was spotted by a volunteer fireman from Shellsburg around 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon when he observed skid marks on the highway leading off the roadway into a steep ravine.
Michael was alone in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by Benton County Medical Examiner’s Office personnel.
Early investigation indicated that the vehicle dropped off the right side of the roadway as it entered a curve. The driver over corrected as he pulled back on to the roadway going across the road and into a very steep ravine on the east side of the roadway striking several trees.
Agencies responding to the scene were Shellsburg Fire Department, Shellsburg First Responders, Center Point Ambulance.
