News :: Top 10 ranked Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters Trap Team begins fundraising
· 4:27pm January 9th, 2014
The Vinton-Shellsburg High School "Red Cedar Shooters" Trap Team has begun fundraising efforts to support their 2014 competition season, which runs from April 1 through the end of May this year.
This year's team has nearly 40 Vinton-Shellsburg High School students, up from 30 last year, and the largest number yet for the team, and includes 5 lady shooters, and 17 returning letter winners from the 2013 season.
The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters Trap team was started in the 2009-2010 with the help of the Iowa DNR Shooting Sports Program and the Red Cedar Chapter of the Izaac Walton League of America, to promote firearms safety and education, and as an effort to get kids safely involved in competitive sporting events who might not otherwise participate in a team sport. All members are required to meet all V-S High School academic eligibility requirements to participate, and are also required to do volunteer work in the community.
Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, the Vinton-Shellsburg School District recognized Trap as a lettering sport, and the 2011 season culminated for the Red Cedar Shooters with a stunning 3rd Place finish at the State High School Trap Championships, ahead of 112 other teams. In 2012, the Red Cedar Shooters finished 9th in the State, ahead of over 170 other teams, and finished their 2013 season in 7th Place, ahead of over 200 other teams.
Volunteer coaches Brad Burroughs, Chris Cantrell, David Martin and Jeff Tilson will leading the team this year.
Beginning in early March, the team will begin practicing at the Red Cedar Izaac Walton League trap range once a week, and will participate in at least one area competition a week during the regular season, and finish the year at the State Trap Shooting Championships, held at the Cedar Falls Trap Club in early June. A generous donation to the Red Cedar Izaak Walton League has resulted in the construction of a second trap house at their facilities for the Red Cedars to use this upcoming season.
With the generous support of the community in past years, the team has been able to fund the expense of practice once a week, and pay entry fees for all of the events they have entered.
This activity is funded entirely by the generous donations and support of the Vinton-Shellsburg community. The total cost of this year's effort is expected to be $18,000, and these kids need your help.
Each team member will be contacting friends, neighbors and relatives seeking individual support to sponsor their shooting season.
Each team member has a $300 individual fundraising goal to help cover the costs of their participation this season.
These kids deserve your support. Please consider making a tax deductible donation to them.
There are 4 levels of donation:
1) Team Sponsor--$300 and up;
2) Professional Sponsor $200-$299;
3) Amateur Sponsor $100-$199;
4) Rookie Sponsor $1-$99;
Sponsors will be recognized with their name and/or business printed on the back of the team t-shirts.
