After Braille School closing, letís stand up for government services

Last week, Representative Dawn Pettengill wrote a column in this paper entitled, "My biggest failure - Iowa Braille School closing." I share her disappointment with the closing. Although not for every vision-impaired student, there are students who need intensive, institutional instruction.

In the Statehouse: My Biggest Failure Think about it. What is your life’s biggest failure? Can you name it? Mine will be with me for the rest of my life. My biggest failure is not being able to preserve a quality continuum of education for Iowa’s blind children. From the reduction of students to the last student walking out the door to now, the Board of Regents selling our Braille School and campus (which began in 1862!) for a measly $1.

Know The Law Concerning Underage Drinking

Underage Drinking is an issue most communities have to deal with and Benton County is no exception. In 2008, 40% of Benton County 11th graders reported using alcohol but those numbers have gradually declined since that time. As of 2014, 21% of 11th graders report using alcohol during the past 30 days of being surveyed.
