Events and Activities :: A Flaughless 5K Receives Overwhelming Support from Community
· 7:27pm October 17th, 2012
Large Turnout Expected for Race Day
With only 10 days to go before A Flaughless 5K makes its debut, the community of Vinton and throughout Iowa have already embraced this event with a great deal of support. Thanks to more than 80 sponsors and more than 300 registrations, A Flaughless 5K has already raised more than $3,000 to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
"The support we have received is more than we imagined. We were hoping for a few sponsors, maybe 100 participants and be able to raise $1000 for Wounded Warrior Project," said Georgia Meeker Sysouchanh, who is coordinating the event. "There was not one person that Dan wasn't friends with, and this is an excellent testimony to his character."
Lisa Horak, who is also helping coordinate the event, echoed the sentiment, "This is our first year and we already tripled our goal. I can only hope the momentum continues for years to come."
Online registration for the run/walk will continue through the morning of the race; however the deadline to guarantee a t-shirt has passed. Extra t-shirts will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Visit www.flaughless.com to register.
There will be other items available for purchase with proceeds benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project including: extra race t-shirts ($20), full-zip, hooded sweatshirts ($30), beanies ($10), military-style dog tags ($10) and a few other items for a free- will donation. All of these items have a limited quantity.
Race Day Information
Parking around Riverside Park is limited and we recommend finding a spot along the residential side streets.
Check-in and Registration - Starting at 9 am
Participants will collect their race packets and t-shirts from the check-in/registration table outside the round shelter at Riverside Park (or inside the shelter if there is inclement weather) across the street from Virginia Gay Hospital.
A copy of the route map will be provided in the race packets. There will also be signs, arrows, and course monitors along the route to help direct participants. The map is also available online at www.flaughless.com.
Opening Ceremony and Awards
There will be a short opening ceremony near the new fountain in front of Virginia Gay Hospital at approximately 9:45 which
will include: Ryan Flaugh, the American Legion George G. Luckey Post 57 Honor Guard, and the National Anthem sung by vocalist Makayla Morrison.
Following the race, at approximately 11 am, there will be an awards ceremony with customized military-style dog tags handed out to men and women for first, second, and third place in all age categories.
A Flaughless 5K will go on rain or shine.
