The second annual Children’s Health and Safety Fair will once again be held in conjunction with Garrison’s Fun Day, from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 12. This one-of-a-kind event is up-sized over last year’s Safety fair. There will be loads of giveaways including 10 bikes with helmets; passes to Bloomsburry Farms, Vinton Skating Rink, Palace Theatre, Lost Island, the Grand Harbor Resort, Airport Golf, Roughriders hockey games, Cedar Rapids Kernals, the Benton County Speedway, Adventureland, and Pzazz Fun. In addition to the bikes and helmets, children who participate will all walk away with a bag of goodies donated by area merchants and organizations.

Last year’s Safety Fair attracted over 100 children. Event organizers are hoping to double the number of attendees this year. The Safety Fair is open to all children 14 and under from Benton County or communities neighboring Garrison. Everyone, including adults, who provides a free will donation will be including in drawings for prizes.

“Our focus is on safety. This is all about preventing injuries to children and adult awareness of potential hazards to children,” said Amanda Henkle, one of the event organizers. “A community event like Garrison’s Fun Day is a great way to promote safety. We appreciate all of the support we have received for this event,” Henkle added.

The Safety Fair continues to grow and attract support. Delta Dental has provided a grant for tooth care products, Cargill has provided a $500 grant towards bikes, Koops Auto from Vinton has provide the bike helmets and the Benton County Community Foundation has provided a $1,900 grant.

The first 100 kids to the Safety Fair will receive a free goodie bag. There will be over 30 booths with the following organizations in attendance: Vinton Shellsburg FFA, Benton County Emergency Management , Benton County Sherriff, Benton County Public Health Department, Benton County Conservation, Benton Community FFA, Benton Recycle, Dentist Sara Stuefen, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids, Garrison Library, Garrison Fire Dept., Garrison First Responders, Hawk-I, ISU Extension, Juvenile Diabetes Association, Life Line Resources, Mt. Auburn Fire Dept., North Benton Ambulance, Old Creamy Nature Trail Committee, Operation Lifesaver, East Central Iowa REC, Benton County Rescue 6, St. Luke’s Hospital, Stand for Silent, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Storm Chasers, Tae Kwon Do, Total Balance, U of I Mobile Museum, Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton Cheerleaders, Benton County Conservation, Linn County Hazmat, Vinton Fire Dept., WIC, Fisher Towing and the Garrison Lions Club.

Some activities for the day include: the Vinton FFA Petting Zoo, creating Kid’s ID cards, Meet K9, learning how to make calls to 911, an obstacle course, Face Painting, a Toddler Train Ride, meet Mr. Shucks from the Kernels, learn to make knots and wear a firefighter’s bunker gear. The Vinton Cheerleaders and Tae Kwon Do will provide demonstrations and the Benton Community FFA will show of their flower and garden projects. There will be a number of fire and emergency vehicles of different types on display and for youngsters to explore.

Garrison Fun Day is sponsored by the Garrison Emergency Services Foundation and The Hitchin’ Post. The Garrison Emergency Services Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization serving the needs of the Garrison Fire Department, Garrison First Responders and Garrison Emergency Services Auxiliary also assist with the event. All proceeds of the foundation are used for improvements to the Garrison Emergency Services.
